Interesting.
I have been thinking of having something like the alliance map or the star map printed at a local print shop, but never got further than the first thought.
What would the costs be for (for instance) the alliance map shown on your photograph? Would it be workable internationally or would I be better off finding a professional locally?
I wouldnt know about racial banners, I myself are more interested in things containing more useful information at a glance.
There are a number of things available at the moment, like the strategic maps sold through the eve store. I however do not care much for those since they are more glossy than practical. Also, buying stuff from that shop is not very interesting due to import charges. I use ombey's pdf maps myself since they can easily be printed and scribbled upon. But a one-off large map does sound very interesting to me.

Why would I want to buy a static map, that is
1.) Available to anyone to print out for free + their cost of printing.
2.) Not a static situation.
Good point, maybe the OP's choice of the alliance map isnt the best example, but how about the galaxy in its entirety? The format proposed would allow for a version with all system names in place without losing out on readability. I have a plan of the city i live in on a wall behind my desk, would be very nice to have one of new eden next to it for reference.

It will solve problem #2 with the minor exception of new outposts.
However, it really doesn't answer #1. I know that we have seen in the past though, that people will buy what they can get already for free though. To use an example, I printed out a decent sized, A3, maps of 0.0 for no more than about $2 worth of ink.
If he can make it interesting over the bother of getting it done locally i would. Also, afaik a good universe map, with all the system names, suitable for large print is not available atm.
A3 is pretty small to be honest. The format in the OP's photo (maybe in a landscape orientation) would be a lot better if you want all that info. If an A3 map were really practical to me i'd have made a print at work.

It is small, but each one is A3 in a mosaic so it is four A3 sized pieces of 0.0. Because there just isn't any reason or room for me to have a bigger one. So I guess it's roughly 44"x68".
I thought about printing a really huge one, like 48"xa lot. But then I thought, "really? "
However, for the mere price of $1,500, I will paint you a wall sized oil painting of the Eve map.
Hehe, lemme guess - that doesnt include a ticket to europe :p
I'll wait for someone to come up with a more practical solution... OP?

It comes with having a handmade work of art that it unique in its existence. I should point out that in the art world anything under $3,000 is considered "affordable." Oil Paints aren't cheap you know.
Oh very aware, but I am looking for printed map, not a work of art

THAT sounds like a seriously good idea.
3x3 meter i gather would be too large to be practical, at least for me, half or a 3rd of that would be something i'd actually have a wall for :)
45 pounds seems a bit much (what does that come to? like 70 euros?), although maybe not when put in perspective to materials used and the one-off character of the thing.
really interested in what you'll come up with! thread BM'd
